The Oklahoma City to 30A drive covers close to 700 miles and around 11 hours behind the wheel, which puts it firmly in two-driver or overnight-stop territory for most families. It’s also one of the more service-gap-heavy routes on this list, so a little planning goes further here than it does on a shorter run like Nashville to 30A.
Most OKC families start on I-40/I-44 through the city, then drop south onto US-69 through McAlester before crossing into Texas near Paris. From there the route runs east through Louisiana and Mississippi on I-20 — through Shreveport and Jackson — before picking up I-65 South at Montgomery, Alabama for the final run to the coast.
The stretch through rural East Texas and northwest Louisiana is the part worth planning around — fuel and food options thin out for longer stretches than you’ll see on the rest of the route. Filling up before Shreveport and again before Jackson is the easiest way to avoid getting caught low.

Once you're through Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and into Alabama on I-20 and I-65, the rest of the drive is toll-free interstate.
It's doable in one long day, but at 10-11 hours plus the service-gap stretch through East Texas and Louisiana, most families we hear from either leave at first light or split it with an overnight stop around Shreveport or Jackson.
Leaving before 7am or after 9am clears OKC's morning rush on I-40/I-44. Because this is such a long haul, Friday afternoon departures are the ones to avoid most — you'll hit both OKC's rush hour and a full day of accumulated Gulf Coast weekend traffic by the time you arrive.
